Drumming is not all just hitting a stick on a drum. More complicated rythms involve certain sticking patterns, called rudiments. Hand patterns, called rudiments, are used to add speed, precision, accents, and overall "coolness" to the music. Some rudiments include double strokes, which is playing the same hand twice in a row. (RRLLRRLLRRLLR) Others onclude drum rolls, or "flams", playing the two hands at once, with hand slightly faster than the other. To be a good, advanced drummer, rudiments are a necessary skill to learn.
